So, come along with me, and let’s discover the beauty and empowerment of giving birth at home.
Why I Chose to Have a Home Birth
When I found out I was pregnant with my second child, the thought of having a home birth had never crossed my mind at first.
Initially, I believed home births were only for a specific type of person, and I didn’t fit that mold.
I thought it was too risky, and I couldn’t fathom going through labor and delivery without pain medication – I was convinced that birth had to be a certain way.
However, that changed in 2021 when I became pregnant amid the COVID-19 pandemic; with hospital restrictions and precautions in place, I knew I didn’t want to be in that setting.
Moreover, I wanted to avoid medications this time and have my entire family present for the birth; I didn’t want to give birth alone. But where could I turn?
After extensive research, I discovered the option of a natural, unmedicated home birth with the support of a midwife and doula. The thought of birthing at home and on my terms was freeing. I felt liberated by opening myself up to this birthing option.
Preparing for a Home Birth
Preparing for a home birth involves a lot of planning, and when I decided to have one, I knew I wanted to do everything possible to ensure a safe and positive experience.
To prepare, I immersed myself in research, read many books, recited birth affirmations, and watched several positive home birth stories. I also did a lot of mental preparation, learning important lessons I’m excited to share with you.

Find the Right Midwife and Birth Doula
The first and most crucial lesson I learned was finding the right midwife and birth doula.
During this time of COVID, I quickly discovered that I wasn’t the only one seeking a home birth. Most midwives and doulas I contacted were fully booked, and the race was on to secure my support team.
After interviewing several candidates, I eventually found an experienced and knowledgeable team who shared my values and beliefs about childbirth.
It was essential to me to have support persons who would respect my desire for a natural, unmedicated birth and work with me to create a birth plan that aligned with my wishes.
Create a Birth Plan
The second lesson I learned was the importance of creating a natural birth plan. This plan allowed me to communicate my preferences and expectations to my birth support team.
In addition, it gave me time to reflect on what I truly wanted for my birth experience, especially considering my previous hospital birth.
In my birth plan, I included my preferences for pain management, medical interventions, and emergency procedures, as well as my desires for the atmosphere of the birthing space.
Having a plan helped me feel more in control of the process and provided a clear communication channel for my wishes.

Preparing the Birth Space
The third lesson I learned was the importance of preparing the birth space.
My husband and I spent several weeks preparing our home for the birth, including setting up the birth pool, gathering supplies such as towels, blankets, and pillows, and creating a peaceful atmosphere with candles, music, positive birth affirmations, and other calming elements.
Preparing the space helped us feel more relaxed and comfortable during the birth, which allowed the labor to progress more smoothly.
I had initially wanted a water birth and had rented the birthing pool and set everything up for the big day. However, the idea of the pool left my mind during labor, and I never even stepped foot in it. My midwife reassured me that this is a common occurrence during intense labor.
Building a Support Team
The fourth lesson I learned was the importance of building a support team. While my husband was my primary support, we hired a doula to provide additional emotional and physical support.
During the doula interview process, we asked questions to ensure we selected a doula aligned with our birth preferences and family values.
Additionally, having a midwife I trusted who could provide medical support if needed was crucial. It was essential to me to have a certified nurse midwife and a support team who understood my birth plan and were committed to helping me achieve the birth I wanted.
Building a support team that shared my values and beliefs was instrumental in the success of my home birth.
Labor Begins
Signs of Early Labor
As my due date approached, I started noticing changes in my body. My mucus plug fell out, and I felt irritable and tired of being pregnant.
I knew it wouldn’t be long before I would meet my baby. And sure enough, the night before my home birth, I started feeling cramping. But I brushed it off and continued my regular routine, trying not to get too excited.
I practiced breathing through each contraction but didn’t think they were real contractions. Instead, I was expecting the intense, pictocin-induced contractions I experienced during my first child’s hospital birth. So I remained calm and focused on my breathing, not realizing that labor had already begun.
The following day, I had a midwife appointment scheduled for 1 pm, but I knew then that I was about to give birth that day.
I sent my oldest daughter to her grandparent’s house and immediately called my doula. She advised me to attend the appointment if I felt up to it, so I took a warm water calming bath before heading out.
But as soon as I got in the tub, the contractions intensified. So I called my doula again, and she could hear from my voice that things were progressing quickly. I then called my midwife and had my entire birth team on their way at the right time. After that, I knew it was time to focus on giving birth.
Looking back, I realize that the signs of early labor were there all along. I mistook the cramping, the mucus plug, and the contractions for something else. But I didn’t panic, and I didn’t let fear take over.

Coping with Contractions
Before the doula’s arrival, I referenced the Stages of Labor pdf I had created for me and my husband. This document helped us stay informed and calm throughout the process, as we knew what to expect at each stage of labor.
I highly recommend having some reference sheets to keep your mind at ease and be knowledgeable about what you are experiencing.
As the contractions became stronger, I focused on my breathing and tried to relax my body. My doula finally arrived and began to instruct me on different positions to labor in; she talked me through each contraction, and it felt like I had my best friend throughout the process.
Her words of encouragement, strength, and experience with labor shined through in these final moments. She helped me to eliminate self-doubt and guided me through active labor. A doula’s support is invaluable, and I recommend it to every woman I tell my birth story.
Trusting My Body and the Natural Birth Process
As the contractions intensified, my doula instructed me to sit on the toilet to speed up labor, and boy did it!
Instantly labor pains intensified, and I naturally found my way to the bed and laid on my side. By this time, my midwife arrived along with her assistant, and they began preparing for the arrival of my son.
My midwife continued to monitor my progress, checking my blood pressure and the baby’s heart rate while allowing me to labor my way uninterrupted without any demands.
My entire birth team allowed nature to take its course and waited patiently for the baby.

Birthing My Baby: 10.7 Pound Baby Boy
There were moments when the pain was unimaginable, but when I remembered that ‘labor’ is work. Your body must go through something; your body must work. I knew it was temporary, and it was all just part of the process.
And then came the moment of birth. I could feel my baby’s head emerging, and I knew that I was getting close.
With one final push, my baby was born, and I felt an overwhelming sense of joy and relief. I could hear his cries as he entered the world, and it was a moment that I will never forget.
When I found out he was a 10.7-pound baby, I couldn’t believe what I had just gone through, I couldn’t believe that I did it! The best part was having my daughter there to witness mommy giving birth to her baby brother. I believe this event will leave an imprint on my daughter’s view of birth and its beauty.

Holding My Baby for the First Time
Holding my baby for the first time was pure magic. I was filled with love and gratitude for this precious life that I had brought into the world within the comforts of my own home, my own bed, for that matter! It was liberating and an amazing experience.
Being able to hold my son immediately after birth, surrounded by the people I love, was an incredible gift.

Postpartum Recovery: Nurturing Myself and My Baby After Birth
After giving birth to my 10.7lb baby boy, I entered a new phase of my journey as a mother: postpartum recovery. It was a time of physical and emotional healing as I adjusted to life with a newborn and a toddler. Here’s what helped me through:
Caring for myself and my baby after birth
One of the most important things I did during postpartum recovery was to prioritize self-care. I rested as much as possible, ate healthy meals, and stayed hydrated. I also focused on bonding with my baby through skin-to-skin contact and lots of cuddles.
Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding was a challenge at first, but with the help of a lactation consultant and supportive family members, we established a strong nursing relationship. It was a beautiful way to bond with my baby and give him the necessary nourishment.
Adjusting to life with two kids
One of the biggest challenges of postpartum recovery was adjusting to life with two kids. It was a juggling act, trying to meet the needs of both my newborn and my toddler. But with time, we settled into a routine and found a new normal.
Emotional and physical healing
Postpartum recovery was also a time of emotional and physical healing. I allowed myself to feel the range of emotions that come with giving birth and becoming a mother again. And I focused on gentle exercise and pelvic floor strengthening exercises to help my body heal.
